Why is art so effective in promoting wellness?
In life uncertainty is scary and disorienting; in creativity, being in a state of the unknown is necessary.
Art, music, poetry dancing, or singing helps us transform what we know about ourselves, developing one’s freedom for expression and perceptions either outwardly or inwardly, as all forms of art encourage self-growth.
Cognitive exercises promote improved concentration such as problem solving and planning. While self-expression naturally leads to emotional health, including the development of positive social and other life skills. Validating one’s unique presence on earth.
Each performance, in its own way, helps us to feel empowered, to take risks.
For some, evolution in creative endeavors brings us to a realization that we are in fact, writers, musicians and artists at heart. Some may have experienced these roles in their earlier lives to have them renewed and expanded in their current experiences. Others engage in these art forms for the first time and come to recognize new, positive identities with great pride and joy especially after challenging difficulties we all have experienced one time or another.
These new identities are among the first and often, most important steps in building new lives thereby raising self-esteem and hope about the future. Simultaneously, the collective effect of all creative work, builds a sense of community.
Over time, individual’s creative works will reach and profoundly impact the greater community and encourages their own reintegration in that greater community.
